The Northern Journal, a local history magazine, was first published in the
winter of 2003 as "Northeast Michigan's Magazine of Heritage" and ended in 2008.
Publisher was Mark C. Powell of Lupton, Michigan publishing the Journal four times a year
with contributing editors Nelson Yoder and Mavis Helzer. The magazine covered "stories in the categories of History, Genealogy, Amish Lifestyle, Community-Related Events, Outdoor Happenings, Gardening, Flowers & Plants, Birding, Cooking, Weather (according to the Farmer's Almanac), Fishing, Solunar Reports, Poems, and other areas of interest in Northeastern Michigan." The publication covered and included "articles and stories from within the counties of Alpena, Alcona, Oscoda, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin, Arenac, Roscommon, Crawford, Otsego, Montmorency, and Presque Isle."
